      <image:caption>I filled in the grid with a pre-made solution then got to work figuring out where I wanted to start. It’s interesting to note that often where I start filling in cage clues is not necessarily where the player can best start out from. Part of this more free form puzzle design is getting used to the creating winding puzzle structures on the fly and practicing being able to flex that muscle when it’s needed.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>What I would start out doing is just picking numbers from the solution that I would want the player to be able to get. I would build the start of the puzzle around trying to give the players enough so that they could get those numbers at the very least. For the first few sudokus that was my strategy to just go quick and complete the puzzles so that I could move on and learn from them.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - My First Sudoku</image:title>
      <image:caption>To do this I essentially concentrated on one or two numbers that I wanted to direct the player towards in particular. In a 6x6 grid there aren’t a lot of solving solutions you can cater to like in a 9x9 grid. But to just get this first Sudoku made it was about getting it finished so I could reflect on what to do next. Filling out this grid with clues was just about communicating the minimum necessary for the player to solve it and also give them a starting position.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - My First Sudoku</image:title>
      <image:caption>The second Sudoku was more of the same. What is the minimum amount of clues necessary to allow the player to fill in the grid. Even then looking back over it I can see numbers that could have been removed to make the puzzle a little more interesting. The 5 in box two and the 1 in box five are prime examples. However, I’m not great at solving Sudokus, there’s definitely more for me to learn in terms of solving solutions so I can get better at designing them.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The next thing I identified was that due to the symmetry of the grid there are these dual intersections at each corner. I wanted to use these 4 cell intersections as the starting point of the puzzle. So I made each of the puzzles a minimum and maximum value clue each with only one solution where the intersecting cell is forced.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Leading With Clue Intersections</image:title>
      <image:caption>I started off with some analysis in photoshop where I highlight areas that are structurally interesting that help give ideas to how clue variations might be constructed. I identified this square pattern of the largest intersections that was such a large feature in the last Kakuro. I decided to use the same min/maxing with these clues to keep things a bit simpler for me.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Learning how to make a Renzoku</image:title>
      <image:caption>So this was the first one I made and straight away my own critiques of this puzzle is that there are way too many dots communicating consecutiveness. The dots act as clues, but too many of them and the solving process is a simple matter of filling in the blanks because there aren’t many logical leaps to make. What I learned from this one is that because all of consecutive information is given, the lack of a dot between cells communicates almost as much as if there was a dot there. So it’s important to use a combination of consecutiveness and those that aren’t consecutive.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e9c60b995e4b74d792630f6/f07d2371-2a95-4e4f-986c-c5329b18faf9/Renzoku+1-+2.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Practicing Design - Learning how to make a Renzoku</image:title>
      <image:caption>So the complexity of a Renzoku isn’t determined by the number of dots in it, but it does give a lot of information in these small 5x5 grids. What I tried with this one was to specifically fill in the numbers of the grid so that there were fewer consecutive relationships. This made for a slightly more difficult puzzle but with the given numbers it still manages to be fairly trivial.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Learning and naming new techniques</image:title>
      <image:caption>Following on from that I wanted to differentiate this one as long min/maxing. As previously mentioned the 28 is constrained across its 7 cells by the lowest value digits possible from 1-7. The 16 forces out the maximum digit on that range: 7. And the 15 clue, by way of its intersections, forces out the 6. This trickling down of the maximum digits on the 28 clue allowed me to focus on the lower numbers for the rest of the column.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Learning and naming new techniques</image:title>
      <image:caption>Okay, so for my own purposes I’m calling this particular technique a detached cross section. The end product is finding out the order of the 4 clue. But to do that we must understand a chain of events. The maximum digit in a 7 cell 28 clue is 7 so that disambiguates the 16 clue at the bottom, placing a 9 in the lower part of the 10 clue and a 1 in the upper part. It is this 1 that makes the detached cross section. The 4 and 10 clues don’t intersect directly, but by the constraints of the 4 clue and the 1 placed on the row which sees that clue we can ascertain the order of the 3 and 1 which belongs to it.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Finally making a number crossword</image:title>
      <image:caption>With this corner I wanted to offer some contrast to the low numbers being used in the bottom right corner whilst still affording the player a way in. The 8 clue plays a big role in disambiguating the 16 which pretty much collapses that corner. But it does get interesting when this corner starts to move into the central 35 clue. I hadn’t placed the 6 or 18 but what I wanted was for this central area to be teased out when the player works on the opposing corner in the top right. I think I need more testing to see if that succeeded. but it’s an interesting design concept I want to work on further</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Finally making a number crossword</image:title>
      <image:caption>So I started with this corner in the bottom right. I was interested in that intersection between the 35 clue and the 4 cell that goes downward into that corner. I liked the idea of the maximum 35 clue being affected by a 4 cell minimum clue. So I initially thought of a 10 but that wouldn’t work because it’s 1, 2, 3, 4. So I moved it one up to an 11 which immediately allows the player to place the 5 in the 35 clue.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Trying to understand a 3x3 grid</image:title>
      <image:caption>I started by using lessons learned from my smaller pieces of kakuro practice in the past: low leading high. I used the 6 clue in the top right to trigger the 3 being set from the 20 clue because it forces that minimum. I used the 8 clue on the bottom left against that other 20 clue. This created an ‘8/9’ corner in the top left which is somewhat disambiguated by the 11 clue. This starts to give enough information where all that’s left is a 2x2 to solve. Unfortunately I messed up the maths and it doesn’t work. A sign of things to come in this attempt!</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e9c60b995e4b74d792630f6/378c89a4-1bfa-43ae-8574-e240ebfa453b/Kakuro+4-4.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Practicing Design - Trying to understand a 3x3 grid</image:title>
      <image:caption>So what I thought was the problem was the 8 clue in the bottom left which I changed to a 9 because it was only a difference of one digit needed from the 14 clue in the top middle. What this then created was an interchangeable ‘1/2’ corner which doesn’t make a unique solve. What then followed was a couple more instances where I changed clues on the bottom left hand side to accommodate this. All I actually had to change was that 14 clue at the top.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Fake doors beyond instant failures</image:title>
      <image:caption>A really simple example of this is the labyrinth here. The two entrances on the left and right are the correct ones and the fake one is at the bottom of the puzzle. The way the two walls constrain that entrance make it so the player can’t both go for the corner cell on the bottom left and through that tunnel right above the fake door. It’s a throwaway fake door that is instantly found out if you start from there.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Fake doors beyond instant failures</image:title>
      <image:caption>So this area has three walls which constrain the path from the fake door in a very specific fashion which is shown below.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e9c60b995e4b74d792630f6/da2a3d97-ac05-4192-afeb-b7cbce1683fc/Labyrinth-8-7.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Practicing Design - Fake doors beyond instant failures</image:title>
      <image:caption>Cell at the front door is obviously taken. Then the path must immediately move to the corner and out one cell to the right. Because of the wall on the right edge of the area it must go into that corner cell then move down one. This has the effect of taking away the free space that’s needed to traverse the ‘S wall’. Also the corner wall section at the bottom of this red area prevents another solution from forming too.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5e9c60b995e4b74d792630f6/b42314dd-74e6-4dbc-9313-a593b9a09016/Labyrinth-8-4.jpg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Practicing Design - Fake doors beyond instant failures</image:title>
      <image:caption>This first area with the ‘S’ like wall structure is very constrained and throws a lot of players out. You have to enter through one side and exit through another. But it also transposes you to another row on the grid which can be disorientating when you are traversing through. This area and wall structure constrains the fake door because it’s placed near the labyrinth walls and so you need space to travel around it.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>So I started to do that with this one. I took one large clue (the 6) and tried to find ways to constrain it with smaller clues on its edges so that it took up the far right column and one extra cell. This largely worked and the puzzle has a potentially nice flow by examining how the 1 and 2 clues are in turn constrained by their relationship to the 6 clue and how they allow a path to wind around them.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Combining Path and Clue Approaches</image:title>
      <image:caption>I almost got there! Unfortunately there’s not a unique solution with wildly different variations on the 4 clues. I did the same thing as I did with the pair of corner 2 clues up above. But because the 4s are both so malleable the player is really able to shape the space around them. I think the next step with Nurikabes is to use more 4 clues and to constrain them a bit more so I understand the shapes they can take. Essentially more practice needed!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Learning A New Unique</image:title>
      <image:caption>I was having trouble making any Nurikabe puzzle with a unique solution. But the most recent experimentation bore fruit at last. I took a smaller 3x3 corner of the grid and experimented with that space. Using a number 2 clue in the corner it showed exactly what i could do with the space. From that clue I worked on the black line and how that should withing the 3x3 and beyond.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Learning A New Unique</image:title>
      <image:caption>What we see here is a later iteration on the puzzle. one way to ensure some form of uniqueness when starting to design these types of puzzles is to add lots of constraints. This makes the puzzle easier for the player but it teaches the designer how to make a unique one when starting out. The only clue which broke that uniqueness was the 3 in the top left. Changing that to a 4 made the whole puzzle click.</image:caption>

The ‘X’ is an important tool for players to figure out where filled in boxes shouldn’t go and constrains the solving process.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I next experimented with wall structures in another grid to see how the player would be constrained or challenged. It’s at this point that I began to see how ‘entrance first’ design in labyrinth puzzles can be a problem.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Creating With Entrances</image:title>
      <image:caption>My next approach was to draw out the route (I tried to think of interesting wall structures too). During this point I don’t know to what extent I can construct a route whilst thinking about the other entrances. I’d like to try next time but it seems like an approach that would break my brain.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Practicing Design - Creating Through Walls</image:title>
      <image:caption>What’s interesting about this wall structure is that it forces players to go through four squares in a specific way. When placed next to the edge of the puzzle it really constrains player movement within the labyrinth. If the player enters from the left hand side they will exit and must go down to account for the trapped square. Other singular wall constraints can suggest room or route structures to the player but this one is fairly self contained.</image:caption>
